Engaging with the Realms

Take the next step in helping your organisation become a thriving hub of creativity and innovation.

Learning Environment

The pace of change and characteristics of economic, technological, social, and environmental transformation has highlighted the crucial role creativity has in supporting young people to learn and to engage in the opportunities and challenges modern life presents.

Based on extensive research, and in collaboration with teachers, the Centre for Realms of Thinking has developed a highly effective approach to teaching and learning creativity. In the process of mastering the basics and building disciplinary mastery, students are guided to employ or draw on creativity dispositions.

Interdisciplinary Study Time (IST)

Evolving out of our research and work with Realms of Thinking, the School developed and runs a unique program commonly referred to as IST. The program was initially rolled out in 2013 across our Primary Years, where it is known as Immersion Studies Time. This title linked nicely with teacher’s understandings of immersive and emergent learning that is so closely associated to our Junior School educational philosophy of learner development. Due to the program’s ability to successfully foster and nurture learners’ (and teachers’) creative thinking, it was decided to progressively transition IST into Years 7-9. Due to the scheduling demands of Senior School i.e., students move between subject/teachers and classes throughout the day, the program moving into Years 7 and beyond was titled Interdisciplinary Studies Time.

Realms Certification

Realms of Thinking Certification recognises the need for teachers to grow and refine their practice continually. It values and acknowledges the importance of teacher’s disciplinary and professional knowledge, the need to exercise professional judgement and to be informed by research and evidence that is context-specific and relevant to students’ needs.

Accomplishing Realms of Thinking Certification is not incongruent to working with nationally acknowledged teaching practices and standards. This process encompasses teachers’ own ongoing professional development for refined understandings of the Realms of Thinking Model and its implementation when employing the Realms of Thinking Teaching and Learning Framework.

Readiness Assessment

For a Realms of Thinking place of learning to be successful, there must be a culture of trust and a spirit of innovation in each layer of leadership. The first phase of any organisation being able to maximise the potential impact of Realms of Thinking is an assessment of culture and leadership.
